Every pair that comes through HFYF goes through the same check before it gets listed. Here is what we look at, in the order we look at it, and what it means for you when you buy from us.
1. The box and label
We start with the box because it tells us what the shoe is supposed to be. The label should match the pair inside: style code, colorway, size and production details. A box label that doesn't line up with the shoe is the first thing we flag. For older pairs and Friends & Family releases, packaging can vary, so the box is a starting point, not the final word.
2. Shape and stance
Set a pair on a flat table and look at it from the side and from behind. Toe box height, heel curve and the way the shoe sits are hard to copy. On models like the Jordan 1 and the SB Dunk, the heel shape and toe profile are some of the quickest tells.
3. Materials and stitching
We check how the leather, suede and nubuck feel and how they take light. Stitching should be even and consistent from panel to panel, with clean corners and no loose threads where it matters. Premium collaborations like Travis Scott and Off-White use specific materials, and we compare them against known retail pairs.
4. Tags, insoles and the details inside
The size tag carries a lot of information: production dates, factory codes and the style code, all in the right font and spacing. We look under the insole, at the printing on the sockliner and at the stitching underneath. Small inconsistencies here are often what separate a convincing fake from the real thing.
5. Smell, glue and finishing
It sounds simple, but it works. Factory glue has a distinct smell, and the finishing around the midsole and outsole tells you a lot about how a pair was made. Messy glue lines, uneven paint or rough edges get a second look.
6. Third-party verification
On top of our in-house check, we use trusted third-party authentication apps where it makes sense, especially on high-value pairs and rare releases headed to The Vault. Two independent checks are better than one.
How we grade condition
Authentic is the baseline. Condition is what you are choosing between. Every listing is graded one of three ways:
- New: deadstock, never worn.
- New (Imperfect): never worn, with something we call out, such as box damage, a missing lid, a factory mark or aging.
- Pre-Owned: worn or tried on. The photos show the exact pair you will receive.
Our guarantee
We stand behind everything we sell. All sales are final, but if an item is ever proven inauthentic within 3 days of delivery, you get a full refund. The details are in our refund policy.
